1. What will you store?

Heavy items such as drinks, rice and tins need stronger shelves and shorter spans than light items like snacks or medicine boxes. Tell your fabricator what goes on each shelf.

Products change. Shelves that can be moved up or down let you rearrange stock without buying new units.

4. Fit it to your space

Measure walls, ceiling height, doors and windows. Leave aisles wide enough for customers to pass each other with a basket. Plan where fridges, tills and sockets go before you order.

5. Finish and colour

Mild steel shelving needs a good painted or powder-coated finish to stop rust. A colour that matches your brand makes the shop look planned. For bakeries and anywhere food is handled, choose smooth surfaces that are easy to wipe down.

6. Labels and lips

A front lip stops small items sliding off, and a strip for price labels keeps the shelves neat. Both matter in pharmacies and supermarkets.

7. Safety

Tall units should be fixed to the wall or floor so they cannot tip. Put heavy stock on the lower shelves.
